The Mehtas--Izzy

                                  The Mehtas' Visit By Izzy

7-31-2017

Last weekend our friends, the Mehtas, visited us for about three days. The first day, we went to Belmont Park. My favorite rides were Tilt-a-Whirl and Beach Blaster. The Beach Blaster is a ride where you are sitting where your feet are hanging down and it swings you back and forth REALLY high!! Nico and I went on it twice. We also went on tilt-a-whirl three times. Belmont Park is right on the beach, so we went to the beach for a while. We body surfed and tried to boogie board, but the waves weren't good for boogie boarding. The last thing we did was mini golf. At the end of the course, there was a skeeball like hole where you give your ball back. Auntie Monique made it in and we got a $5 gift card to the arcade!!

The second day, we went for a hike at Torrey Pines and then went to La Jolla to see the seals and sea lions. We looked at them and saw 6 baby sea lions. We went later in the day, so the beaches were fillled with people instead of seals and sea lions. I always love hanging out with Auntie Monique, Uncle Neal, and Nico, and we hope to see them soon!

The volcano erupted when Auntie Monique got the hole in one  at the last hole.

Kroc Center Camp--Izzy

Kroc Center Ice Skating Camp By Izzy

7-31-17

This past week we did camp at the Kroc Center. Cia and I did Intro to Ice camp. The Kroc Center has an Ice Arena, and we skated there at a different camp last year. We loved it so much we decided to do and Ice camp. We had a thirty minute lesson every day and then had two hours of free skate. We are now much better skaters than we were before. We learned how to do a spin, but I'm not very good at it. We also learned how to do a lunge, a one/two foot glide, and I did get one blister and a big bruise on my left knee from falling on it twice. Overall, now I want my own skates and I love skating even more!!!!

MY BIRTHDAY!--ETHAN

 MY 8th BIRTHDAY!--ETHAN

3 days ago was my 8th birthday! I had a lot of fun. I woke up and went to open my presents. Mom and dad gave me a plasma light ball, 2 soccer jerseys, a new soccer net, and Star Wars Battlefront on the PS4. I got a Jason Heyward ( baseball player on the Cubs) jersey from my MOMO and JIJI, and another soccer jersey from my sis, Izzy. She also gave me a wild animals coloring book. I did all the stuff I needed to do ( make bed, eat breakfast,  brush teeth)  and then I played star wars battlefront.  It is SO fun. Then we went to camp. Camp was fine but we were at a camp that I don't like.

After camp I got to choose my own dinner. I chose Tonkastu for dinner Because its my favorite.
This is tonkatsu.

The MEHTAS -- ETHAN

THE MEHTAS
The last weekend the Mehtas visited. I had a awesome time. They came for about 3 days.  The first day we went to Belmont park. We watched Nico do the first thing and then we went on the Tilt-a-whirl. It is from my mom's CHILDHOOD. I Loved it SO much I went on it THREE TIMES! I wish there was a wristband so you can choose one ride to go on a lot. I would  choose  TILT-A-WHIRL. I will go on it a million times next time. I was super sad when I couldn't go on it any more.

We also went to City Tacos, the beach, and Poke One N Half. The big thing we did was going to Torrey Pines. For lunch we had Streetcar. After we went to the beach to see the seals. They're SO cute! We saw about 6 baby seals. I miss them already.

PACHIS CAMP --ETHAN

PACHIS --ETHAN
This week we are going to a camp called Pachis. It is an art camp. We pretty much go there every summer. The STAFF know both me and Izzy's name. Below is their logo. The studio is behind it.

We've done a lot of projects. We did a robot,  boats, paintbrush holders, and a few more. My favorite is the robot. They said it should almost be as tall as one of the people in your group. Ours is two feet but if we need to make it as tall as one of us, we need two more feet of things. It also has to move. Ours runs on cd's that are connected by a bamboo stick. Also, we made more than one robot. We made 5. Three are babies and two are parents. I don't have a picture but Izzy might be able to take one if she brings her phone. I hope we do a lot more awesome projects.

The Limarzis' and coming back to San Diego - ETHAN

1.THE LIMARZIS' HOUSE

We had an awesome time at the Limarzis' house. We got there on Tuesday the 11th at 10:00 am. First we talked about stuff and we ate breakfast. We ate eggs. It was delicious!  Then the kids went downstairs and played foosball and basketball. The next day Marco and I had  a slam dunk contest. Then Izzy and Brigid went upstairs to find out the characters who were going to run for president in our pretend election. Meanwhile Marco, Alex, and I played. The people who ran for president were BIG NATE, BARBIE, and CHASE. Big Nate is from a book.Below is a picture of Big Nate.
Chase is from Lab rats. And, of course Barbie is from Barbie: life in the dream house. We were joking and saying she made the national anthem of the US the barbie theme song. After that we had lunch. For lunch we had SANDWICHES. i had a ham sandwich. After lunch we went to a baseball game. People from colleges all around the US played. There was even someone from Georgetown! I was rooting for his team. The two teams were the Thunderbolts and the Grays. The Thunderbolts had a good lineup. But so did the Grays. The grays started off Winning.During the second Dad and I got food for both of us. I got two hot dogs and dad got a cheeseburger with a ginger ale.

This is a video of us doing the Fun Bunch a celebration the Redskins used to do.

It feels good to be home because I haven't been home for so long.  I'm happy to  hear Anfoof snoring again.

Highlights from the Limarzis'--Izzy

Highlights From the Limarzis' By Izzy

7-15-17

My favorite parts of our trip to the Limarzis' was the election. Last summer, we did a fictional election with some characters including Barbie. There was another election this summer, and Barbie won again! There were only three candidates: Barbie, Chase Davenport (from Lab Rats), and Nate Wright (from Big Nate). I helped organize the election and the press conferences. There was a live conference and one that we filmed. I also loved going to Adelphi Pool because the have a slide, 2 diving boards, AND a basketball hoop! It was so fun and the slide was so high! I loved that we would all talk about something together. We had a great
time!

I love being back home and I missed Mom and Dad. We had a great time on our trip but we were away for SOOOOO long!! I am glad to be back!😍

The National Archives And National Treasure1 --ETHAN

1. THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES

Today we went to the NATIONAL ARCHIVES. We went there to see declaration of independence because it is involved HAMILTON so we HAD to see it. I can't show you a picture because if you take a picture of it you would get in big trouble. The light will make it disintegrate. And also I don't have any pictures because you can't take any pictures. You'll have to see it your self.

2. NATIONAL TREASURE1

Two days ago we watched NATIONAL TREASURE1.  I think it is better than the second one but ( can't spoil it so i'll just say it has something to do with the free masons. KOKO actually looked it up and the Gates family is actually real! The main person is a person in the gates family and that's all i'll say.

                                                 and

National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets By Izzy

7-10-17

Today we went to the Library of Congress. An alarm was going off earlier but we went a little while after. We got in through the tunnel from the Capitol to the Library. We walked around and saw Thomas Jefferson's library. He read a LOT!!!!! We also got bookmarks that have Jefferson's quote that states "I can not live without books." We got to see the reading room in a room of glass to keep out the sound.

We watched National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets which shows this area when they are in the Library of Congress. Ben, Riley, and Abigail are looking for the President's book, which holds lots of secrets like a clue that leads to the treasure. They aren't supposed to be seen in the special area that the book is in and it has a lock.

Dad Arrives and the Escape Room!!!--Izzy

Dad Arrives/The Escape Room By Izzy

7-9-17

Today Dad arrived in D.C.!! We drove to pick him up from BWI, which is in Baltimore. After that, we drove to the Escape Room place. We also stopped at a bar so Dad and Koko could grab a beer. The escape room was wizard themed and we had to find the wizard because he had gone missing. He always takes his spell book with him, but this time he left it in the apothecary. We had to find 5 rings that fit into the mirror frame. We used 2 hints and still didn't get out. The problem was that we had a button that was pushed down and it wasn't supposed to. This messed us up because we weren't able to get one of the rings and we didn't know the button was pushed down so we ran out of time. Over all, it was really fun and I really want to do another one VERY SOON!!!

DADDY ARRIVES AND ESCAPE ROOM -ETHAN

1. DADDY ARRIVING

Today dad got into into the airport BWI. It is in BALTIMORE. The other airport is DCA which is in DC. He got in at 3:30 pm. He left the gate at 7:30! That is 5 hours on the plane! I get plane sick when were on the flight from DC to SAN DIEGO because it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
long! I was happy to see dad but the airport was CROWDED! That's why I don't like airports.

2. THE ESCAPE ROOM

After picking up dad KOKO had planned an escape room. She wouldn't tell us what theme it was until we were about to go in she told us it was WIZARD themed. Izzy was very excited about it. The case was THERE IS A WIZARD THAT HAD BEEN LOST AND THE KING WENT LOOKING FOR HIM AND EVREYONE KNOWS THE WIZARD ALWAYS TAKE HIS MAGIC BOOK WITH HIM AND HE DIDN'T SO WE HAD TO FIND WHERE THE WIZARD IS . We found out that we needed 5 rings to get him through the magic mirror in 45 minutes.  It was hard and we Failed.
But next time we will WIN.  We used 3 clues and we Still did not get through the magic mirror. I want to do it again.

Billy Goat Trail!!-Izzy

The Billy Goat Trail By Izzy

7-8-17

We were SO tired!
Ethan played with the water.
Today we went to the Billy Goat trail which we also went to last year. We parked and walked to the trail. Ethan spotted a frog that was brown, he was just sitting on a rock. There were also a few helicopters that were flying really close and low, above the river. We only did half of the trail then turned around and walked to a beach. We put our feet in the water and I collected some shells and put them in a bottle that Koko gave me. There were some people that had a dog named Zara. Zara played around in the water and was very friendly and came up to us so we pet her. She even swam a little bit.
These are my shells. The sticker on the bottle is from Compass Coffee.
Koko and I went on some rocks.

This is on the trail and you can see the river.

MOUNT VERNON! - ETHAN

VISITING MOUNT VERNON!

Today we visited MOUNT VERNON. Mount Vernon is where GEORGE WASHINGTON lived. We even saw his and his wife's grave. His wife was Martha Washington. Below is GEORGE WASHINGTON'S grave. It is in a chamber which is guarded by a gate.  Around his grave are four big stone obelisks with his sayings carved into them. I didn't think he was buried. I thought he was cremated.

Another thing is he owns 10 bedrooms and 9 of which were guest rooms. And one of the bedrooms was where Marque de Lafayette slept in!Lafayette had a painting of himself in front of his bed. Washington was born on february 11th, 1734. He died on December 14th, 1799. He died age 67 and was killed from  and throat disease and his througt closed in and suffocated. That's a pretty harsh way to die. Me and KOKO think Martha died of old age but who knows?

When we saw his tomb I wanted to see him in his tomb. He probably rotted and bugs ate him. Except I don't know about the bug thing but i'm pretty positive he did rot. I was amazed because he was supposed to be the richest man in America at that time and part of it was he was born into a rich family. Another part of it was he ran for president for eight years even though he could of ran for his whole life. He wanted to let other people run too. I think he was the best president ever because he didn't want power and he didn't want to expand the US. He is the exact opposite of the president now.

We took a tour if his house at 10 :15 and his first room (my favorite room) is bigger than most HOUSES IN VIRGINIA! On the way there we saw his animals. The two types animals he owns are cattle and sheep. He owned the cattle for milk (I think) and sheep for wool and milk ( Again I THINK). We even got to touch the sheep! The looked hot in the wool. But they said on weekends in may the hand shave them. Then they said they send it to the weavers that knit the wool and weaved it till it was clothes that GEORGE and his family could wear.  Below is a picture of me and Izzy petting the sheep closest to the fence. The sheep behind the sheep we are petting is my favorite and Izzy's too. I call him toffee because he is the color of toffee. He is the only brown sheep and the other sheep is black but he ran away right before we took the picture. I also have names for the cattle to. The bigger one is BOPPER and the smaller one is backwards because he was facing backwards.

Right before we went into GEORGE WASHINGTONS fruit garden, two sheep were fighting for food and the famed each other! Nothing bad happened but I felt sad because he didn't get any food. The sheep that won looked greedy. He wanted all the food. His fruit garden had a lot of good looking food and one thing that KOKO actually tried was small sour plums according to KOKO.

I would own Mount Vernon if 1. I could afford it and 2.I could take care of it. I mean who doesn't want to own it. It's bigger than the White house!  I looked it up snd it is 11,028 square feet (according to google but it might be wrong) ! It was an awesome experience and I want to go there again next year!

Endurance and Grit! Mo Mo's Perspective

July 5, 2017
Our two grandchildren, Izzy, age 10, and Ethan, age 8, were just with us for two weeks of "summer adventures.'
They left us yesterday and we are missing them!

We are missing their incessant energy, laughter, silly jokes, etc. To use Seiko's description, we are missing our "giggle farts." But we are especially missing two well behaved, respectful kids who are smart and creative, enthusiastic about learning, and who impressed us daily with their endurance and grit!
(Well done, Mine and Marc!)

We had specific goals to achieve in those summer adventures. Mine and Marc wanted "JiJi" (Japanese informal word for Grandpa) to teach them as much survival Japanese as possible in preparation for their summer vacation trip to Japan in August. And I, "Mo Mo," (common name used for grandma in Southwest Louisiana, my former home) had to encourage them to read several books on Japan and also to continue journal writing, which they had done before. And along with this school stuff, they had to have a lot of fun!

To accomplish these "goals,” we began with incentives and choices. They each got to choose their own journal from Office Depot and they were able to write about anything they wanted that happened each day. If they wrote reports on books they read about Japan, they earned extra points. I was able to get 10 excellent books from the Evanston children's library on Japan, and they could choose to read any of the titles that interested them. I suggested that they try for 4 titles each which they easily accomplished. Each also had a binder where they kept handouts on their Japanese language study and other brochures collected from places we visited such as the Morton Arboretum where they saw a fantastic exhibit on origami sculpture. They earned stars on a special chart in their binders for journal writing, Japanese, behavior, cooperation, chores, and "extra achievements."
The star points at the end were converted into money for something special they wanted or for the Japan trip spending money.

Shortly after arriving here, I suggested to Mine that we also start a blog for them and that perhaps each would take turns to write about something special they enjoyed while here -- maybe taking turns to post twice a week. Then as a family they could continue with the blog while in Japan as a way of sharing some of their experiences with all of us left behind. Although Mine was skeptical about another school-like "commitment," she decided to work with them to set one up. It's called:"Iz and E-man’s Summer Adventures." Well, weren't we all surprised when both Izzy and Ethan took to the blog with gusto with each choosing to write daily about their experiences since the blog was initiated. There have been no complaints about doing it each day. This was in addition to the journal writing. My job was an easy one -- only to read it when done. They both know how to bring in photos which they take every day or which they find on  Google Images when needed. They taught me many easy ways to maneuver the blog! Even though I have been keeping my own blog on and off for several years, it has always been "painful" to remember what I need to do for each new post. Working with them was a constant reminder of how technology has reformed education and the ways we have to use when teaching these young minds that soak it up so easily because their brains have been rewired to do this. Old minds like mine have a hard time holding on to any technology learned, especially if not practiced often. If interested, you can access their blog at:
https://bloggingwithizzy-ethan.blogspot.com/?m=1

One of their posts entitled, Interviewing Our Grandpa JiJi about World War II turned out to be quite remarkable.
It took several days to do this beginning with coming up with questions, interviewing and taking notes, and then typing the responses into the blog.  Hiroshi and I  were both impressed with their choice of questions and with the effort they took to do research on some of the content JiJi told them about, like the types of planes and the balloon bombs. We family members all admitted that we learned something new about the war and about the Okano family from this interview. This interview will always be treasured and we are so grateful that it evolved so naturally from their reading about Japan and especially the dropping of the atomic bomb. The book that motivated the interview was Hiroshima: A Novella by Laurence Yep.  Izzy, Ethan and I read it together so that we could have a discussion about it along the way. Although it's written for children, it has descriptions about the bombing that can be disturbing. Izzy had a hard time getting to sleep the night we finished it. I think their visit to Hiroshima in August will be a memorable and meaningful experience.

When a friend asked me this week about the grandchildren's visit, I told her about some of the things we did and about the blog. Her immediate response was..."But can they do hopscotch?" I was happy to be able to respond, "Yes, and they have also made a hopscotch on the sidewalk that extended almost a block long! It had taken them hours to construct and hundreds of hops to complete!" Although they did a lot of "school stuff," they also spent a lot of time outside. I recognized early that it was important to let them expel some of their energy on a regular basis at the local park or school ground. In the park, they befriended two families of geese and ducks, even naming the offspring. They did gardening and caught fireflies at night. And of course, we did the usual trips to the zoo, the planetarium, and the aquarium.  We were all busy with little time to be bored and we went to sleep fast.  Although there was a lot of structure, there was a lot of fun, too. It's in the blog.

There was also music in their lives. When Izzy saw that I had "Hamilton" on discs, she wanted to listen to it because she had heard about it from a a friend who had seen the play. So each day we listened to it in the car on our way to places. And all three of us became captivated with the music and the story. (Although I had the music, I had not taken the time to listen to the whole thing!) When Seiko saw how enthusiastic they were about Hamilton, and after listening to it herself, she planned her activities in Washington D.C. to capitalize on their interest in the Founders of our country. Hence, they visited Williamsburg, Yorktown, Mt. Vernon. And at Xmas, we are planning to see the play, Hamilton, in Chicago.

When I think of my own childhood and compare it with theirs, I see how "privileged" they are. My summer adventures that I can remember were riding our bikes with the neighborhood kids to "where ever" we wanted to go in that small rural Louisiana town and making up all kinds of games and plays and fishing on the bayou, and also doing a little reading although we had no library close by to give us many book choices. We didn't have a lot of structure in our lives. We had no television until I was in 8th grade. Anyway, that's another interview for another time. The challenge today is to provide a balanced life for these kids so schooled in technology with so many opportunities to experience, together with an equal love for nature and outdoor activities.

So far, I think Marc and Mine are doing a great job trying to balance the digital world with nature and outdoor activities. Involving the older generations is a good way to do this as it becomes two-sided.
We both teach each other and also learn from each other. We get to know each other in a special way through sharing both good and bad memories and through struggling to be patient with each other while learning something new or while trying to "act" young again. As I reflect on having Izzy and Ethan with us this summer and sharing various adventures together, I conclude that it involves a lot of choice and planning together with goals, structure and flexibility. And for it to really have meaningful results, I think there needs to be endurance and a lot of grit on both sides!

DEBS House -ETHAN

DEBS HOUSE😎😎😎

Today on the way home from YORKTOWN we stopped at KOKO'S friends house. Her name is DEBS. Her house is like a MANSION! She has a pool, a little cabin where the horses live, four  big things of grass for the horses, a side part, a horse racing track, a BIG FRONT YARD, and a barn. And  actually we got to drive a TRACTOR that was like a car. The fastest I drove was 16 miles per hour!   The video up there↑↑ is a video of me driving the tractor and Izzy filmed it when she rode in the trunk and she was scared! I was scared when Izzy was driving the first time because I thought she was going to crash us into a tree. But, luckily we survived. The fastest Izzy went was 15 miles per hour and I wasn't scared. I thought Izzy is going to be a wreck less driver when she grows up but she doubted it.Then she said I was going to be a wreck less driver and I said NO WAY!  Another thing is the horses were BLADE and CRAFTY. My favorite horse was CRAFTY because it seemed like he was more friendly and he ate out of my hand. But Izzy rode BLADE. BLADE is smaller and he seemed not as strong because he was younger.
This is the horse CRAFTY.

This is Izzy on BLADE.

Williamsburg, and the Battle of Yorktown by Izzy

7-7-17

Williamsburg

These are some things they made at
the Silversmith.
This is my delicious chocolate!
We went to Williamsburg again, but only for the morning. We bought the tickets for the carriage ride and then went to the millinery, the silversmith, and the coffee house. The coffee house was the best!!! We went inside, and they served us coffee, tea, of chocolate. Ethan and I got chocolate and Koko got coffee. The chocolate is melted dark chocolate that has some added spices like nutmeg, and cayenne pepper. It was very rich and YUMMY!!!! I loved it but Ethan thought it was ok. We saw the dining room and the owner's study. We went on the carriage ride and then got our things from the market. I got a bow and arrow and Ethan got a pretend gun that they had in the 18th century.
This is the carriage we rode in.

Yorktown

Yorktown was only 20 minutes away, and we went to the American Revolution Museum. We saw an exhibit that talked about the founding fathers of America, like Alexander Hamilton. There was a area with a lot of tents that showed you what it would be like to have fought in the Revolutionary War. There was a station where you got to enroll in the army and the guy asked us some questions. You would serve for 3 years and get money or land for your reward. We chose land and he also gave us fake $20. We also got to see some tobacco that was being cured.

This is the tobacco that is being cured.
We are in one of the bigger tents in the camp ground.

Williamsburg!!--Izzy

Going to Williamsburg! By Izzy

7-6-17

Today we drove to Williamsburg and listened to Hamilton on the way. My favorite parts were touring the Randolph house and the governor's palace. They were REALLY BIG!!!!!! Something I saw a lot of were canopy beds. The beds always had a canopy. I also really liked the joinery. It is a shop where the workers joined pieces of wood together to make things like doors, windows, and more.

We are in a tunnel of plants.

I promise I didn't do anything wrong!!

We enjoyed some delicious root beer!

Going To 1775! -ETHAN

GOING TO 1775!😮😮😮

Today we went to the WILLIAMSBURG! We went there because we have been listening to HAMILTON the play that is all raps. Williamsburg is where JAMES MADISON, LAFAYETTE, JOHN LAURENS, HERCULES MULLIGAN, AND OF COURSE GEORGE WASHINGTON passed through during the war. THOMAS JEFFERSON actually was the governor of Virginia and HAMILTON lived there during the time. My favorite part was the RANDOLPHS house. The most part of the house is from 1717! THAT IS ABOUT 300 YEARS OLD! Except the add on to the house is from 1753. I think the most fancy room is the dining room.In every tour( like the Randolphs house)

there is a guide dressed up as a person that lived in the 1700s and the girls wear a dress and a boy wears a colonial uniform. I  would not want to wear a boys uniform because it looks HOT!

Each 13 colonies had their own uniform and in WILLIAMSBURG they wear the VIRGINIA uniform. George Washington made the rule that each coloney had to have their own uniform. The picture of a person going to war up there ↑is not a VIGINIAN UNIFORM.Except I do not know which colonies wear this  UNIFORM.I am glad that we are not living in the 1700's because we don't get TVS in the 1700s.😭😭

First Day With Koko--Izzy

Our First Day With Koko! By Izzy

7-5-17

Today was our first day in D.C. We watched TV on the plane, and then took a taxi back to Koko's house. I didn't really feel good during the ride in the car, and I threw up in a trash can that was right outside where the taxi dropped us off. Thank goodness that trash can was there, or else I don't know what I would've done! 😓😅 We walked to the hardware store, CVS, and Whole Foods. We were looking for glue for slime at CVS, and they didn't have any Elmer's glue which is what we normally use. Instead we got another set of glitter glue. We ate lunch and shopped at Whole Foods and then walked back home. We watched What On Earth? and did our tinker crates. One of them was Fiber Optic Stars that look like a constellation but I also wrote my name and drew a cat. You draw it with a white crayon and I was very HAPPY with the results.  Here they are:

First Day With KOKO-ETHAN

FIRST DAY WITH KOKO!😎😎

Today was our first day with KOKO(Block of GRIT). I think this is the most boring day of the week (not including the day you leave) because you don't get to go and actually do something. We only got to watch TV and go to Munchies.  The Airline we took to get to Washington DC was AMERICAN  AIRLINES. Below is a picture of a flight and the two logos for AMERICAN AIRLINES. I would think they would have only one logo because  then it gets distracting. The plane in the picture looks like the plane we flew on. Also AMERICAN AIRLINES has two looks of planes. The first one is silver with red, white, and blue lines on the bottom so the plane we went on was way different looking. I have been in the silver plane before and it is older but I like it better. Another thing is I was relived that we didn't land in the airport BWI because my dad, Izzy,  and me had to sleep overnight in that airport! I was SO cold! My dad ended up putting his shirts on us because we were so cold. We could here people whispering about us and that was part of why it was hard to go to sleep. A lot of the time the AIRLINE pays for your family at a hotel but they didn't do that so I was mad. I wish we could stay in a hotel.
